THE HOMEPROS FIELD GUIDE · plumbing

Questions to ask before hiring a plumber.

A useful plumbing conversation covers the diagnosis, the exact work, who will do it, and what happens if the initial repair reveals another problem.

BEFORE YOU REACH OUT

Get these three things ready.

  • Describe the affected fixture and symptoms
  • Note shutoff access without attempting unfamiliar work
  • Have fixture model details available if replacing a product
01

Start with diagnosis

Ask how the plumber will identify the cause and what the diagnostic visit includes. Distinguish repairing a component from replacing a fixture or opening a wall. Ask what evidence would change the proposed approach.

02

Confirm the right professional

Check relevant trade credentials with the issuing authority and ask who will attend. Ask who determines whether permits or inspections are required. A broad home-repair description does not establish plumbing qualifications.

03

Make the finish work explicit

Ask whether the scope includes opening walls, patching surfaces, disposal, fixtures, and cleanup. If another trade must restore finishes, identify that responsibility before work begins.

04

Plan for changes and follow-up

Request written approval before additional work. Ask what the workmanship terms cover, who handles a faulty owner-supplied fixture, and how to report a problem after the appointment.

Take these questions into the conversation.

What exactly are we agreeing to?
Ask for the included tasks, exclusions, materials, and completion expectations in writing.
What would change the scope?
Ask how an unexpected condition is documented and how you approve additional work.
Who handles the follow-up?
Confirm the contact process for questions, missed tasks, or a problem after the visit.
