THE HOMEPROS FIELD GUIDE · electrical

Questions to ask before hiring an electrician.

Describe what you want the electrical work to achieve and let a qualified electrician assess the system. Compare diagnosis, scope, and inspection responsibilities rather than a short task label.

BEFORE YOU REACH OUT

Get these three things ready.

  • List affected rooms and fixtures
  • Record when the symptom occurs
  • Keep model information for proposed fixtures
01

Describe the symptom safely

Explain flickering, intermittent operation, or a planned new appliance without opening panels or attempting unfamiliar tests. For immediate hazards, seek appropriate emergency help rather than waiting for a routine directory response.

02

Ask about assessment

Ask what must be inspected before a proposal can be finalized. A new device may involve more than replacing the visible fitting. Confirm whether circuit capacity, access, or existing conditions affect the scope.

03

Confirm responsibilities

Ask who will perform the work, what qualifications apply, and who handles permits and inspections when required. Include wall access, repair of finishes, and disposal in the written discussion.

04

Keep the handover useful

Ask for an explanation of the completed work, any operating instructions, and the process for follow-up concerns. Save inspection documents and the accepted scope with your household records.

Take these questions into the conversation.

What exactly are we agreeing to?
Ask for the included tasks, exclusions, materials, and completion expectations in writing.
What would change the scope?
Ask how an unexpected condition is documented and how you approve additional work.
Who handles the follow-up?
Confirm the contact process for questions, missed tasks, or a problem after the visit.
