THE HOMEPROS FIELD GUIDE · house cleaning
Move-out cleaning: a practical handover checklist.
Use the property’s written handover requirements and an agreed cleaning scope. Cleaning can support a good handover, but it does not guarantee a deposit outcome.
BEFORE YOU REACH OUT
Get these three things ready.
- Read the property’s handover requirements
- Arrange access after belongings are removed
- Document condition and completed work
Start with the property requirements
Identify any written expectations for appliances, cupboards, floors, and fixtures. Share them with the provider so the scope addresses the property rather than a generic package.
Coordinate the sequence
Plan cleaning after moving and repair work wherever practical. Confirm when utilities, access, and parking will be available. A return visit may be needed if another trade creates mess afterward.
Walk through the checklist
Agree on kitchen and bathroom surfaces, empty storage interiors, floors, and included appliance work. Note pre-existing stains or damage separately from cleaning tasks.
Document the handover
Keep the service checklist and condition photographs. Raise omissions through the provider’s stated process. Lease obligations and deposit decisions remain separate from a cleaning service’s performance.
Take these questions into the conversation.
- What exactly are we agreeing to?
- Ask for the included tasks, exclusions, materials, and completion expectations in writing.
- What would change the scope?
- Ask how an unexpected condition is documented and how you approve additional work.
- Who handles the follow-up?
- Confirm the contact process for questions, missed tasks, or a problem after the visit.
